This exhibit of recent ceramic works by Dan and Mary DeFoor is composed of two themes. In “Formed by Fire” Dan explores balance and pattern in sculptural works that feature the contrast of white geometric ceramic forms against textural surfaces of charred wood. Finely veined natural cracks enhanced with black ink give visual texture to the sleek clay forms. In “Songs of the Sacred Harp” Mary designs both imagery and words to apply to Dan’s wheel thrown vessels. Inspired by the centuries old acapella Sacred Harp “shape note” singing tradition, the geometric shapes of the musical notes become a decorative element gracing platters and vases. Some of the pieces present the shape notes in patterns to form mandalas; in others the notes are accompanied by lyrics of Sacred Harp tunes inscribed on their surface.
